POS Operator in Kwara Squanders N280m Sent to him in Error

A Point Of Sale (POS) operator in Kwara State, identified as Alfa Rafiu, has been arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force for squandering the N280 million that was mistakenly paid into his account by a commercial bank.

Rafiu, a resident of the Akuji compound in the Abayawo area of Ilorin was arrested and whisked away to Lagos on Monday.

Rafiu reportedly went on a spending spree after he received the alerts in batches some weeks back.

According to sources familiar with the issue in his neighbourhood, instead of Rafiu to draw the attention of the bank that mistakenly transferred the N280 million to his account, he went on a spending spree.

He reportedly bought houses, and cars and sponsored people to lesser Hajj. This raised suspicions amongst his neighbors about his sudden wealth as a POS operator.

It was further gathered that the bank auditors later discovered the error and sent law enforcement agents after Rafiu who was arrested and moved to Lagos.

The Kwara state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident.

“His arrest was carried out by the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department from Alagbon-Close, Ikoyi, Lagos which makes it out of our jurisdiction,” he said.
